The Armenian Catholic Patriarch Nerses Bedros XIX said that "compelling reasons must be taken into consideration before making any military move and war resolution on Syria and that no one can know the results in advance; regardless of exact calculations on this step it could lead us to regret and failure." In an appeal to decision-makers regarding a military strike on Syria, he said that past experiences in Iraq, Afghanistan and Serbia taught us later through the disastrous results that it left, that ill-considered hasty and inadequate decisions left devastation, homelessness and impacted negatively on those who took the resolution, these negative consequences created extremist organizations and groups causing worry to a lot of countries as these groups can penetrate the security of the most safe communities, suicide attacks being the biggest proof of that."
He stressed that "the countries that help the system to overcome its problems and improve its performance through dialogue makes peace possible. Take into account the position of His Holiness the Supreme Pontiff Pope Francis, a man of peace and love who has called repeatedly for negotiations and dialogue as the path for resolving the difficult political problems and differences.”
He added, "Consider Dear Sirs, before resorting to a military strike, how many casualties there will be and how much devastation and destruction there will be and how much emigration will increase from Syria? Will you take into consideration all these results and consequences? Regret in hindsight does not help anyone."
He concluded: "Please think carefully before taking action as you cannot imagine the disastrous consequences, the wise man should not be mistaken in his calculations, lest he becomes a lesson of failure and ridicule for others." Original article in Arabic here.
